FAQ

This guide will walk you through the process of finding, downloading, and installing CAD models on Octopart. CAD models downloaded from Octopart will only download in the file type you choose in a ready to install native format. Below you will find the steps for adding these models to your libraries for each format.

Downloading models: logging in

To download CAD Models on Octopart you must first log in with a valid Octopart account. If you do not already have an account, click the Sign In button on the top right of the page and follow the prompts to create an account. cadfaq1 cadfaq2

Downloading models from the search results page

On the search results page, click on the CAD Models link located on the right hand side of the page under the Datasheets button. You will then be taken to the CAD Models section of the part detail page.

From the part detail page, click on CAD Models to be taken to the CAD Models section of the page, or scroll down.

Select your desired format by clicking on the corresponding button. Your download will then begin automatically.

Requesting models

If CAD models are not available for a part, you may request to have the model produced from EE Concierge by clicking on the light blue button under CAD Models. You can also sign up to be notified if the part model becomes available in the future.

Installing models in Altium Designer

The following are the instructions for loading a library that was downloaded from Octopart into Altium Designer or CircuitStudio.

Your component download will consist of a single zip archive file which contains the following files. Download the file and unzip it to find: - A folder named parts which contains; - the symbol, (.SchLib__) - footprint(s) and 3D STEP model. (__.PcbLib)

The schematic symbol and footprint will be all you need.

To add the downloaded library to your workspace:

  1. Extract the zip file downloaded from Octopart (if not already done).
  2. In Altium Designer or CircuitStudio, open the Libraries panel. adlibrariespanel
  3. Click the Libraries… button.
  4. Click Install » Install from file… adinstallfromfile
  5. Browse to the parts folder where you extracted the zip archive in step 1.
  6. Group-select (CTRL+Click) the schematic library file [Octopart Part Name].SchLib and all associated *.PcbLib files with it and click okay. Then close the “Available Libraries” dialog. ad3
  7. Select the loaded schematic library from the Libraries panel drop-down list.
  8. Check that the footprints are correctly found. If the footprint preview does not at first appear, right click in the Libraries part list and click “Refresh Library”. ad4
  9. Click Place to place the part when you have a schematic or PCB document open for editing.

NOTE: This process is the same in both Altium Designer and CircuitStudio, the only differences being the color of the UI panels and dialogs.

Installing models in EAGLE

  1. In the CAD Models section, select the EAGLE button to download the .zip file. This .zip will contain a single .lbr Eagle Library file containing Device, Package, and Symbol files corresponding to the part. It may also contain one or more .step files, if 3D models are included.

NOTE: The .lbr will not contain an Eagle 3D Package. You will need your own 3D modeling software to open these .step files.

  1. Extract the contents of the .zip file to your Eagle libraries folder.

  2. Open Eagle. From the Control Panel, right click Libraries and click Open library manager. cadfaq12

  3. In the Library Manager, under the In Use tab, press the Browse… button to locate your .lbr file. cadfaq13

  5. Your library should now show up when you press the Add command. cadfaq15

Installing models in OrCAD

  1. Select OrCAD in the CAD Models section on Octopart.

NOTE: OrCAD files are symbols only.

  1. Unpack the download to your preferred location.

  2. In OrCAD, open an existing Design or create a new Design in order to access a Schematic Document.

  3. Open a Schematic Document then select Place > Part from the menu or press the Place Part button. This will open the Place Part Panel.

  1. In the Place Part Panel under Libraries press the Add Library button.

  2. Find the .olb file extracted from the download and press Open. The parts within the Library are now available for placement. cadfaq18

Opening models in Upverter

  1. Before choosing the Upverter format on Octopart, make sure you are logged into Upverter.

  2. Once you are logged in, click the Upverter file format button in the CAD Models section of Octopart. You will then be taken to Upverter.

  3. Once on Upverter, click the Add to Library button in the top right corner of the screen.
